If you’ve visited LA Optical on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, chances are you’ve already met Zuko – our friendly clinic dog who’s become a firm favourite among patients and team members alike.
Zuko isn’t just any dog. He’s an ex-guide dog with over 18 months of specialised training, rehomed as a therapy dog in 2023 by optometrist Abby Ussher and her family. Since then, he’s been coming to work with Abby and has quickly become an irreplaceable part of our East Toowoomba optometry clinic.
Zuko is a black Golden Retriever–Labrador cross, known for his gentle nature, quiet confidence, and warm presence. With his background in guide dog training, Zuko is incredibly well-behaved and calm – the perfect companion to help patients feel at ease.
For many people, visiting the optometrist can feel a little nerve-wracking, especially for children or anyone with anxiety. Zuko helps create a welcoming and relaxed environment where patients feel more comfortable during their eye exam or treatment.
Whether he’s offering a quiet nuzzle, lying at your feet in the waiting room, or simply greeting you at the door with a wagging tail, Zuko’s goal is to make every visit feel a little lighter.
Important Things to Know
🐾 Zuko is in the clinic on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays (or when Abby is working)
🚪 We only ask that you close the door behind you when you enter – Zuko loves a greeting but isn’t allowed out without his lead!
🐕🦺 If you have allergies or concerns around dogs, please let us know – we’re more than happy to keep Zuko in the reception area during your visit.
